Yuri Alexeyevich Gagarin  was a  Russian  cosmonaut ( astronaut ). He became the first human in  space  on April 12, 1961, in a  rocket  launched by the  Soviet Union . Yuri Gagarin was born in the village of Klushino,  Russia , on 9th March 1934. His parents, Alexey Ivanovich Gagarin and Anna Timofeyevna Gagarina, worked on a farm .
