WALT: Understand asteroids and meteorites
Meteorites are rocks from space that land on Earth's surface. Most meteorites are fragments of broken asteroids, which are massive rocks that orbit, or travel around, the Sun between the planets Mars and Jupiter. Many meteorites land on Earth every year. Most are small and fall into the oceans and are never found.
An asteroid is a chunk of rock and metal in outer space that is in orbit around the Sun. Asteroids vary in size from just a few feet across to hundreds of miles in diameter. Most asteroids are not round, but are lumpy and shaped like a potato. As they orbit the Sun, they tumble and spin.
On the link below is a list of the top 10 asteroid impacts on Earth. Have a go at marking them on the world map.
Take a look at the information on the link below about the Winchcombe meteorite in February.
You are going to imagine that you are a TV news reporter. Using the information, write a news report that you can act out. This can be recorded on an iPad, phone or tablet. If you would like to share the report, it can be emailed to the school.
